Inflammation Isn’t the Problem. Understanding It Is.

What inflammation has to do with how you feel in perimenopause, and what actually helps

You’re waking up feeling puffy. Your joints seem a little achier than they used to. Your workouts leave you more sore, and recovery takes longer. Your energy is lower. Your weight feels harder to manage.

And you find yourself wondering: What happened to my body?

Maybe you’ve started wondering if inflammation has something to do with it. It might.

But before you start eliminating foods, buying every “anti-inflammatory” supplement on the shelf, or trying to completely eliminate inflammation from your body, there’s something important to understand: Inflammation isn’t inherently bad.

In fact, it’s a normal and necessary part of how your body protects itself, responds to stress, and repairs damage.

The bigger question is what happens when your body keeps getting signals that tell it to stay switched on.

And during perimenopause, there can be a lot of those signals.

Because inflammation doesn’t happen in isolation.

Inflammation may be part of the story, but the real story is your whole-body environment.

So before we talk about what to do, let’s understand what’s actually happening beneath the surface.


What Is Inflammation, Really?

Inflammation has become one of those health words we hear everywhere.

“Inflammatory foods.”

“Reduce inflammation.”

“Anti-inflammatory diet.”

“Chronic inflammation.”

But what actually is inflammation?

Think of it as your body’s emergency response system. When your body detects an injury, infection, or other threat, inflammation helps mobilize the resources needed to respond. Blood flow increases. Immune cells move in. Your body starts repairing and protecting the affected area. That’s acute inflammation, and it’s a good thing.

If you sprain your ankle and it becomes swollen, warm, and painful, that inflammatory response is part of your body doing its job. 

The problem is different when the inflammatory response becomes persistent or repeatedly activated. Instead of an emergency response that turns on when needed and then settles back down, your body can begin receiving ongoing signals that something needs attention.

Those signals can come from many places:

  • Poor or disrupted sleep

  • Chronic stress

  • Blood sugar dysregulation

  • A diet that doesn't adequately support your nutritional needs

  • Gut dysfunction

  • Sedentary behavior

  • Overtraining or inadequate recovery

  • Excess body fat

  • Environmental exposures

  • Underlying health conditions

This is where chronic, low-grade inflammation becomes important.

It isn't always something you can feel directly. And it doesn't mean that every ache, extra pound, or tired morning is caused by inflammation.

But it can be one piece of a much bigger picture.

Why Does Perimenopause Change the Inflammation Equation?

This is where things get particularly interesting.

During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone aren't simply declining in a neat, predictable pattern. They're fluctuating. 

And estrogen does more than influence your menstrual cycle. It interacts with your immune system, metabolism, brain, cardiovascular system, and other tissues throughout your body. As hormone patterns shift, the environment your body is operating in shifts, too.

But hormones aren't the only factor.

Think back to everything we've talked about throughout this series:

  • Your nervous system affects how your body responds to stress.

  • Your sleep affects recovery, metabolism, appetite, and how resilient you feel.

  • Your gut influences immune function, hormones, mood, and inflammation.

  • Your blood sugar affects metabolic stress and energy regulation.

  • Your muscle mass plays an important role in weight management and metabolic health.

  • And your ability to recover may change as your body changes.

These aren't separate conversations. They're part of the same conversation.

That means you can be doing many of the same things you've always done and suddenly find that your body responds differently.

It isn't necessarily that you've forgotten how to take care of yourself. The environment your body is operating in has changed.

And that matters when we're talking about inflammation.


Could Inflammation Be Behind How You’re Feeling?

Maybe. While inflammation can be part of the picture in many of the symptoms women experience during perimenopause, it is rarely the entire picture.

Let's look at a few of the most common questions.

“Why am I so puffy?”

Inflammation can influence fluid shifts and how tissues respond to stress.

But puffiness can also be influenced by hormones, sodium intake, hydration, digestion, sleep, alcohol, stress, and other factors.

So inflammation may be part of the explanation, but it isn't automatically the explanation.

“Why do my joints feel so much achier?”

Inflammatory signaling can play a role in joint discomfort.

But changing estrogen levels, muscle mass, physical activity, recovery, previous injuries, sleep, and other factors can influence how your joints feel, too.

The answer isn't necessarily “I need to reduce inflammation.” It may be that your body needs a different combination of support.

“Why am I not recovering from workouts like I used to?”

Inflammation is actually part of normal muscle repair.

Your body needs an inflammatory response to recover from exercise.

But when recovery demands consistently exceed your ability to recover (because of poor sleep, inadequate nutrition, high stress, too much training, or other factors) that balance can shift.

And perimenopause may change that equation again.

“Why does my weight feel harder to manage?”

Inflammation may be one piece of the puzzle.

But so are insulin sensitivity, muscle mass, sleep, stress, appetite regulation, activity levels, and changing hormones.

This is why “just reduce inflammation” is such an incomplete answer.

“Why am I so tired?”

Inflammation can contribute to fatigue.

But fatigue can also have many other contributors, including sleep disruption, hormonal changes, blood sugar instability, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid function, stress, medications, and more.

So if you're exhausted, inflammation might be worth considering, but it shouldn't be the only thing you consider.

Notice the pattern?

Inflammation shows up in each conversation. But it doesn't tell the whole story. And that's exactly why understanding your individual picture matters.


What Actually Helps Calm the Inflammatory Load?

Once you understand that inflammation is influenced by your whole-body environment, the goal becomes much more practical.

We're not trying to eliminate inflammation. We're looking at the things that may be repeatedly telling your body that it needs to stay on high alert.

And notice that we don't need a 27-item anti-inflammatory checklist. Instead, start with the foundations. Many of these foundations are the same ones we talked about when we looked at supporting your hormones in perimenopause

Start With Sleep

Sleep is one of the most powerful recovery tools your body has.

When sleep is consistently disrupted, your body doesn't get the same opportunity to regulate stress hormones, support metabolic health, repair tissues, and restore your nervous system.

And if you've been waking up at 3 a.m. or finding that your sleep has changed during perimenopause, this is worth paying attention to.

Not because you're doing sleep “wrong.” Because sleep is part of the inflammatory picture.

Support More Stable Blood Sugar

Your blood sugar doesn't need to be perfect.

But repeated spikes and crashes can place additional metabolic stress on the body.

Building meals around protein, fiber-rich carbohydrates, healthy fats, and minimally processed foods can help create a more stable environment.

And this is another reason I don't love talking about inflammation without talking about blood sugar. They are connected.

Build and Maintain Muscle

Muscle isn't just about strength or how your clothes fit.

It's metabolically active tissue that plays an important role in glucose regulation and overall metabolic health.

Strength training also gives your body a reason to maintain muscle during a life stage when muscle loss can become easier.

More exercise isn't always better, though. Your training needs to be balanced with your ability to recover.

Move Your Body Regularly

Movement supports circulation, metabolic health, insulin sensitivity, and overall resilience.

You don't need to punish yourself with intense workouts to get these benefits.

Walking, strength training, mobility work, cycling, Pilates, and other forms of movement all count.

The goal is to give your body a consistent signal to adapt and stay strong, not another source of stress it can't recover from.

Take Care of Your Gut

Your gut and immune system are in constant communication.

And as we talked about last month, your gut isn't just digesting food. It's influencing hormones, mood, inflammation, and even how resilient you feel.

Supporting digestion, regular bowel movements, a diverse range of plant foods, adequate fiber, and the overall health of your gut can be an important piece of the inflammatory picture.

Give Your Nervous System a Chance to Come Down

Your body was designed to respond to stress. It wasn't designed to stay in “go mode” indefinitely.

Chronic stress doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. Sometimes life really is demanding. But creating small opportunities for your nervous system to shift out of constant activation matters.

Morning light. A walk. Deep breathing. A meal without your phone. A few minutes of quiet. Boundaries around your time and attention.

These things may seem small. They're not. They're signals to your body that it doesn't have to stay on high alert all the time.


Can You Actually Test for Inflammation?

Yes, but there isn't one lab test that can tell you the whole inflammation story.

Certain biomarkers can provide useful clues about what's happening inside your body. But they're most meaningful when they're interpreted alongside your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and other lab results.

A few that may be worth knowing about include:

hs-CRP

High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a commonly used blood marker that can provide information about systemic inflammation.

It's useful, but it isn't a diagnostic test for a specific cause of inflammation. An elevated result doesn't automatically tell you why it's elevated.

Ferritin

Ferritin is primarily a marker of iron storage.

But ferritin can also increase in response to inflammation, which means it can provide helpful context when interpreted alongside other markers and your overall health picture.

This is an important distinction: Not every useful number is an inflammation marker.

Sometimes we're looking at markers that help us understand the environment in which inflammation may be occurring.

CBC

A complete blood count (CBC) isn't an inflammation test, but it can provide valuable context.

For example, your white blood cell count and other blood cell measurements can contribute to a broader understanding of what's happening in the body.

Metabolic Markers

Markers such as fasting glucose, A1C, and fasting insulin don't directly measure inflammation.

But they can tell us a great deal about your metabolic environment. And because blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and inflammation are interconnected, metabolic markers can be an important part of the bigger picture.

Homocysteine

Homocysteine is another marker that can provide useful context around cardiovascular and metabolic health and nutrient metabolism.

Again, it isn't a standalone “inflammation test.” And that's actually the point.

There is no single number that can explain your entire health story.


Your Labs Are a Snapshot. Your Health Is a Story.

This is one of the most important things to take away from any conversation about labs.

One lab result is a snapshot. Your health is a story.

A single result can give you information. But trends over time can give you context. And symptoms matter, too.

Think about it this way:

Symptoms tell you how you feel.Labs give you information about what's happening beneath the surface.Trends help you see the direction you're moving.

Together: Symptoms + labs + trends = context.

This is why it’s important not to look at one number in isolation and immediately decide that something is “wrong.”

It's also why your lab results shouldn't simply be handed back to you with a reference range and a standardized protocol. 

A result can be technically “normal” and still be worth understanding in the context of your symptoms, goals, history, and other markers.

And the opposite is true, too: a result outside a reference range doesn't automatically explain everything you're experiencing.

This is where having a trusted provider matters. Someone who can look at your results in the context of you (your symptoms, history, lifestyle, previous labs, and goals) and help identify where there may be opportunities to investigate further.

The goal isn't a standardized protocol based on one number. It's a plan that makes sense for your body and your situation. And then comes the part that is often overlooked: Actually implementing the plan.

Knowing what your body needs is one thing.

Changing your daily habits, navigating real life, adjusting when something isn't working, and staying consistent long enough to learn what helps is another.

That's where health coaching can be incredibly valuable. A good coach doesn't replace your healthcare provider. Instead, coaching can help bridge the gap between knowing and doing, turning information into practical changes you can actually live with, while helping you notice patterns, work through obstacles, and stay accountable along the way.


When Inflammation Needs a Closer Look

Sometimes the answer really is another small lifestyle shift. And sometimes it's not.

If you're experiencing persistent or unexplained symptoms, noticing significant changes in your health, seeing concerning changes in your lab results, or simply feeling like something isn't adding up, it's worth looking deeper.

Especially when multiple symptoms are showing up at the same time. Because sometimes the most helpful next step isn't another health tip. Sometimes you need better information. And sometimes you need someone who can help you turn that information into a plan.

That's the value of looking at the whole picture instead of chasing one symptom at a time.


The Bigger Picture

Inflammation isn't the enemy. It's one of the ways your body communicates. And during perimenopause, that communication can get more complicated.

Hormones are communicating. Your nervous system is communicating. Your gut is communicating. Your blood sugar is communicating. Your immune system is communicating.

And inflammation is part of that conversation, too.

The goal isn't to silence every signal. It's to understand what they're telling you.

Because inflammation may be part of the story, but the real story is your whole-body environment. And when you understand the bigger picture, the next step becomes a whole lot clearer.

You don't need to figure everything out at once. Sometimes it starts with one small shift. Sometimes it starts with knowing your numbers. And sometimes it starts with having the right person in your corner to help you connect the dots.

Your body isn't broken. It's communicating. Let’s start listening.
